Saint Louis University School of Law is pleased to announce Margaret Donnelly, director of the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS), will join the school's faculty as a Health Law Practitioner-in-Residence. Donnelly will be leaving DHSS in December 2012 and begin at the School of Law in January 2013. She is a 1988 alumna of the School of Law. She also received her bachelor and master's degrees in social work from SLU in '75 and '77, respectively.

"Margaret has long been a friend of SLU Law, and we are so thrilled to welcome her back in this new role," said Thomas Greaney, Chester A. Myers Professor of Law and co-director of the Center for Health Law Studies. "Her vast experience in regulatory policy will provide an invaluable resource to our students as we prepare them to pursue careers in the legal and health care fields."

Donnelly will center her teaching on the legislative and administrative process in health law, as well as engage with students and faculty in informal sessions. As a leader in her field of health law policy, Donnelly's addition will continue to position the School of Law's Center for Health Law Studies at the forefront of health law education.

"I'm very much looking forward to this new opportunity to work with students on these important issues and challenges associated with health care law and the public sector," said Donnelly. "I'm eager to share my knowledge with these future lawyers and policy makers."

As director of DHSS, she served as the state's top public health official and oversaw a budget of $1 billion, with responsibilities ranging from planning Missouri's response to disasters to inspecting hospitals and child care centers to supervising programs that allow seniors and people with disabilities to live independently.

Donnelly served in the Missouri House of Representatives from 2003-2009. She focused much of her work on the state budget and issues relating to families, seniors and health care. She served as ranking member of the Appropriation Committee and the House Budget Committee. Prior to her work in the public sector, Donnelly was an attorney in private practice for 20 years.
