During last week's Women's Council meeting, the board announced it had renamed its scholarship fund the "Women's Council Mary Bruemmer Endowed Scholarship Fund," in honor of Mary Bruemmer, a long-time employee, supporter and friend to Saint Louis University.
"I am very humbled and grateful for this special honor," said Bruemmer, 92, who has been with the University for more than 60 years. "My many years with the Women's Council has provided me with many dear friends and acquaintances. And I am extremely pleased that a renewed focus has been placed on this scholarship and the assistance it continues to provide SLU students."
Bruemmer graduated from Saint Louis University in 1942. She returned to SLU in 1956 and received her master's degree in 1960. Since then she has remained at SLU, serving in a number of positions from dean of Students to full-time advancement volunteer.
Roisin Hughes, president of the Women's Council, said she is thrilled the council moved forward with this initiative and changed the scholarship to honor Bruemmer.
"The applause from the crowd confirmed the high regard and love these ladies have for Mary," Hughes said.
During the presentation at the meeting, Dottie Gorman, past council president from 2006-2008, made a few remarks about Bruemmer and her dedication to the Women's Council and Saint Louis University.
"In some way, each of us has had Mary Bruemmer put her arms around us, whether figuratively or literally speaking. Mary means so much to our council - she is our greeter, bylaws authority, provider of program ideas, historian and passionate champion," Gorman said.
"We all agree that the heart and soul of the Women's Council is Mary Bruemmer. For Mary, everything is always about SLU and the students."
At the end of the presentation, Bruemmer committed a personal gift to the scholarship fund, which led other members to also give to the fund.
The Women's Council was established in 1958 by Paul Reinert, S.J., as a way to keep women in the community informed of the programs and initiatives happening at Saint Louis University. At that time, Bruemmer was the director of Women's Housing and asked to be a part of the council.
In 1984, the council established the Women's Council Endowed Student Scholarship Fund. To date, the fund has provided assistance for many SLU students.
Bruemmer has been fortunate in her years at SLU to have constant interaction with students, she said. But through her involvement, she has also gotten a chance to get a deep insight into the financial struggles that many students have.
"We attract the most wonderful students from all over the country," she said. "But if we can not provide them with the assistance to attend this University, many of them cannot afford to become Billikens on their own."
