As part of World Occupational Therapy Day, the Department of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy faculty and master's students participated in Occupational Therapy Global Day of Service. As part of the day, occupational therapy practitioners and students are encouraged to volunteer community service to an individual or an organization to promote how OT can help improve health and well-being of the people they serve.
Lenin Grajo, assistant professor in the Department of Occupational Therapy and Occupational Science, and 11 MOT-1 students conducted one hour sessions of OT for reading and writing activities in four classrooms at Sacred Heart School in Florissant and the Soulard School in Soulard in Oct. 7.
The faculty, staff and students from all levels of the SLU OS and OT Program contributed by sharing literary materials to be handed out at the classrooms. The group donated more than 200 books, notebooks and school supplies to promote the role of OT, help children enjoy reading and writing, and participate in school occupations effectively and meaningfully.
The department's OT for Reading and Writing Research Team includes MOT-1 students Kelsey Cook, Maggie Scudder and Sarah Martin. The MOT-1 student volunteers include Paige Stockham, Ashlen Meyer, Stephanie Eickelberg, Jessica Reilly, Chelsea Koester, Aisha Helm, Jason Esker and Kita Alvares.
The Occupational Therapy Global Day of Service is sponsored internationally by the World Federation of Occupational Therapists, and promotingOT.org and was started by Karen Jacobs, Ed.D., of Boston University, whose theme was called "PromOTing Occupational Therapy through Words, Images and Actions." She designed and recruited practicing occupational therapists and students around the world to participate in a day of service.
