Prepare to Take Part in RecycleMania 2013
Last year, University community members recycled more than 190,000 pounds as part of the nationwide recycling competition.
Saint Louis University will take part in RecycleMania 2013 starting Sunday, Feb. 3, through Saturday, March 30. This marks the third consecutive year the University has taken part in the nationwide, intercollegiate recycling competition.
Each week during RecycleMania, recycling receptacles and trash dumpsters will be weighed to not only determine the amount of recycling, but also the amount of waste the University alone kept from becoming trash.
Last year, the University community recycled more than 190,000 pounds, diverting nearly 19 percent of its waste output from landfills. SLU came in third out of 10 Missouri schools in the competition's Gorilla Prize category, which recognizes schools that recycle the highest gross tonnage of combined paper, cardboard, bottles and cans.
As part of this year's competition, Facilities Services will sponsor an E-Waste Drive Friday, March 1, and "Adopt-A-Spot," an internal competition in which different teams promote recycling in designated spots on campus. In addition, the Center for Sustainability will sponsor the Can-Can Film Fest to showcase different recycling related documentaries and movies.
