Sustainability Efforts Move Forward at Chaifetz Arena
The home of the Billikens is a greener place thanks to an ongoing partnership between SLU's Division of Facilities Services, Global Spectrum and Sodexo.Event Details: February 22, Chaifetz Arena, 1 S. Compton Ave., St. Louis, MO, 63103
Saint Louis University; Global Spectrum, operators of Chaifetz Arena; and Sodexo, concessionaires of the 10,600 seat arena have partnered to bring new environmentally-friendly efforts to Chaifetz Arena. Since the inception of the program in November 2013, over seven tons of recyclable materials have been diverted from waste.
The amount of recyclable material diverted from landfill is equivalent to the weight of:
- 1 adult male elephant
- 3 standard sedan-style cars
- 17,608 full cans of soda
The environmentally-minded priorities at Chaifetz Arena were jump-started in early 2013. Saint Louis University Facilities Services, in partnership with the SLU Center for Sustainability, wrote, applied for and was awarded a $30,000 grant from the St. Louis-Jefferson Solid Waste Management District and the Missouri Department of Natural Resources to expand the campus single-stream recycling program to Chaifetz Arena.

Brandon Verhoff, Director of Sustainability & Benchmarking for the Division of Facilities Services at Saint Louis University expressed his excitement over the new program,
"It is our hope that Chaifetz Arena will become a beacon for sustainability at SLU and the broader community."
Highlights of the new sustainability efforts include:
- Big Belly Solar Compactors at entrances to collect and compact discarded materials.
- Over 50 new Recycling Bins located at main entrances and throughout the arena.
Sodexo has taken great strides ensuring that all concessions will only source recyclable stand materials for its food and beverage services and recognize any contaminants through appropriate signage.
- Newly announced Green Game on Saturday, Feb. 22, in partnership with the Saint Louis University Athletics Department as the Billikens take on George Washington University. More details regarding the Green Game will be available on TheChaifetzArena.com in the coming weeks.
Stephanie Payne, Sodexo's Sustainability Coordinator at Chaifetz Arena stated, "We're excited to have this opportunity to contribute our sustainability expertise to help Chaifetz Arena move towards becoming a Zero Waste Venue. It's a great way to support the local community and it provides a superior learning platform for SLU students, staff, and guests at the arena."
Jim Wynkoop, Global Spectrum's General Manager at Chaifetz Arena reflected on the progress saying, "We're beyond proud of the steps taken to increase sustainability at Chaifetz Arena. Our efforts are more than just tangible. Going Green is just as much a mindset as it is concrete actions. We're seeing a shift in attitude and overwhelmingly positive results from the entire community and we're proud to be a part of it."
