Student Educational Services held its annual Academic Achievement Awards Ceremony Monday, Feb. 13, in St. Francis Xavier College Church Ballroom. A total of 138 students were recognized for their hard work and dedication in achieving academic excellence. Approximately 200 recipients, parents, faculty and special guests attended this special event.

Students recognized for academic achievement included high school seniors participating in the TRIO Educational Talent Search program, college students in the TRIO Student Support Services program and participants in the TRIO Ronald E. McNair Scholars program, as well as students in the SLU Billiken Bridge to Success. This is the first time that all three TRIO programs have been included in this awards ceremony.

Two students, Emma-Lorraine Bart-Plange, a McNair Scholar, and Kevin Costorf, a participant in the TRIO Student Support Services program, received special recognition from Saint Louis University alumnus Michael McMillan, license collector for the City of St. Louis. Both students were honored with a proclamation and a $500 scholarship from the City of St. Louis.

Bart-Plange, a senior in psychology will be going to graduate school in the fall. Costorf is a freshman at SLU and was also presented with an internship opportunity to work with Michael McMillan. Both students achieved a GPA of a 3.94.

TRIO is a set of federally-funded college opportunity programs that motivate and support students from disadvantaged backgrounds in their pursuit of a college degree. More than 840,000 low-income, first-generation students and students with disabilities - from sixth grade through college graduation - are served by more than 2,900 programs nationally. TRIO programs provide academic tutoring, personal counseling, mentoring, financial guidance and other supports necessary for educational access and retention. TRIO programs provide direct support services for students and relevant training for directors and staff.
