University Gives Vehicles to Society of St. Vincent de Paul Car Donation Program

ST. LOUIS — Fewer Missouri families lack basic transportation thanks to recent donations by Saint Louis University. SLU gave eight vans and trucks that were being cycled out of its facilities services fleet to Vinnie's Autos, a car donation and transfer program operated by the Society of St. Vincent de Paul.

Four of the University's donated vehicles have been transferred to clients of the program, including a struggling family from the St. Louis area, a couple with disabilities living in rural southeast Missouri and a nonprofit organization that serves the homeless in the region. The remaining vehicles, which weren't suitable for the program's needs, were sold at auction or recycled, raising funds that the organization will put toward repairs to 17 other autos destined for clients.

Kathleen Brady, Saint Louis University's vice president for facilities services, said the donation not only fits with SLU's mission of service, but also with its commitment to sustainability, noting that it demonstrates real value that the University can partner with the Society of St. Vincent de Paul to reuse or recycle these vehicles. "The Society of St. Vincent de Paul is an outstanding organization that makes a tremendous difference in our community, and Saint Louis University is pleased to support such a worthy cause," Brady said.

During fiscal year 2013, Vinnie's Autos received 233 vehicle donations — boats, motor homes and motorcycles also are accepted — and provided 79 vehicles to families and individuals. Vehicles that are not a fit for clients are sold on the open market or recycled.

"The Society of St. Vincent de Paul is extremely grateful to Saint Louis University for their generous donation, and we look forward to working with SLU for many years to come," said Greg Marino, Vinnie's Autos program coordinator.
