'St. Louis Business Journal' Names SLU One of Region’s Largest Employers

Business Journal logoST. LOUIS — Saint Louis University is the region's 12th largest employer, according to the St. Louis Business Journal's 2014 "Largest Employers" list released July 25. A total of 25 companies and organizations were named.

With more than 6,800 faculty and staff, SLU is ahead of such leading employers as AT&T, Enterprise, Monsanto and Express Scripts, among others. BJC HealthCare, which has more than 24,000 employees, topped the newspaper's annual listing.

As one of the region's largest employers, SLU is a key economic driver. According to an independent report conducted in 2012, the University's annual economic impact on St. Louis is $715.5 million — with $1 out of every $176 in the regional economy attributed to SLU.

Another important factor in SLU's impact on the region is its financial strength. Earlier this year, the University's endowment topped $1 billion for the first time in history. Also of note, SLU's current annual operating budget is more than $700 million.

In addition to contributing to the region's economy, the University makes a major difference in numerous other ways. Perhaps most notable, SLU students, faculty and staff contribute more than 1 million service hours every year, much of that locally.

The University's No. 12 ranking on the "Largest Employers" list will be included in the St. Louis Business Journal's annual Book of Lists publication. Every year, SLU also makes the lists of the region's largest colleges and universities, as well as largest life science research organizations.
