SLU Receives Two National JASPA Awards

Saint Louis University was the recipient of two national Jesuit Association of Student Personnel Administrators (JASPA) awards during the annual spring conference, hosted in Phoenix, Ariz. JASPA annually recognizes select Student Affairs professionals and campus programs, selected from nominations from the 28 American Jesuit colleges and universities.

Patrice French, coordinator of multicultural education with the Cross Cultural Center, was honored with the JASPA Ignatian Medal for an Outstanding New Professional in Jesuit Student Affairs. This award recognizes individuals who have distinguished themselves in the early years of their careers, and have demonstrated an early record of success and great skill and professional ability.

In her time at SLU, French has coordinated various cultural awareness programs, assisted in the implementation of diversity and inclusion initiatives for students, and provided ongoing guidance and training to cross cultural student organizations. Significant contributions include her role in expanding the Intergroup Dialogue Program as a credit-bearing opportunity for personal reflection and engaged dialogue, and the design and implementation of the Freedom Riders Exhibit. The exhibit highlighted the 50th anniversary of the Freedom Rides, representative of a united struggle for civil rights in the Jim Crow South, and engaged more than 700 faculty, students and staff on campus this fall.

Also recognized with the Ignatian Medal for an Outstanding Campus Program, was Allies for Inclusion: The Ability Exhibit. This annual award is the only Ignatian medal to be given to an institution rather than an individual. The award recognizes creative programming that can be implemented successfully on other campuses, along with honoring an institution for their creativity, effectiveness and focus.

The Allies for Inclusion: The Ability Exhibit, was initiated by SLU graduate student, Anne Marie Carroll, in Spring 2010 and created by a team of graduate students under the direction of their instructor, associate professor of higher education, Karen Myers, Ph.D. The exhibit is an interactive multimedia display designed to promote the inclusion of people with disabilities through respect for others, comfort during interactions and awareness of disability issues. It is sponsored by the College of Education and Public Service and the Division of Student Development, with generous contributions from corporations and individuals.

The show is now available as a traveling exhibit and has been presented at more than a dozen national colleges and universities. Plans are underway to develop additional versions of the exhibit designed to meet the needs of various populations, and include a mini edition, a workshop edition and a K-12 edition.

Higher purpose. Greater good.
