University to Take Part in National RecycleMania Competition
Saint Louis University is preparing for its fourth year of participation in the recycling contest, which will include the annual e-waste drive, Adopt-A-Spot program and more.
Saint Louis University is preparing for its fourth year of participation in RecycleMania, a friendly competition with regional and national colleges and universities taking part to see who can recycle the most single-stream and e-waste on their campus.
This year's competition will run from Sunday, Feb. 2, through Saturday, March 29. The competition is sponsored by the Sustainability Advisory Council, in coordination with the department of Sustainability and Benchmarking.
So, how can the SLU community get involved? First, recycle. Place anything that is recyclable in one of SLU's blue bins. Then, join in on an activity.
This year's activities include the annual Adopt-A-Spot program and other programming activities, Greening the Game and the annual e-waste drive.
- Programs and initiatives: With the success of the Adopt-A-Spot program last year, the Green Billiken is adding more ways for the SLU community to get involved and providing an opportunity to include campus-wide involvement in the competition by inviting departments, offices, clubs and even individuals to host their own events.
- Volunteer: The Sustainability Advisory Council is also looking for volunteers to assist with the large events planned during the competition. A list with descriptions of the activities available to participate in is available online. Anyone interested in hosting an event or volunteering can submit their information via Google Forms.
- Twitter: Follow the Green Billiken on Twitter @greenbilliken for opportunities for trivia prizes and giveaways.
- Battle for the Boot: The annual Battle for the Boot competition continues this year. Members of the SLU community are encouraged to donate shoes in marked boxes placed throughout the campus to help support clean water projects in Haiti and Africa.
Jan. 27-Feb. 17
This year, Recyclemania, in partnership with Keep America Beautiful, will have a special competition to see which college or university can gather the most recycling pledges. The winning school will receive a recycled-content plastic bench.
Greening of the Game, Feb. 22
A new event for this year, Greening of the Game, will take place during the men's basketball game against George Washington University on Saturday, Feb. 22, at Chaifetz Arena. More information about the event, which promotes recycling efforts at the arena, are coming soon.
E-Waste Drive, March 28
All are encouraged to mark their calendars for the annual e-waste drive sponsored by Facilities Services to be held Friday, March 28. For more information about the drive, go to recycling.slu.edu and click on e-waste or visit the Facilities Services website.
