The Saint Louis University men's soccer team has just returned from a week in Madrid.
During their week in Spain, the team visited the SLU Madrid Campus and other cultural spots, including the Plaza Mayor, the Cathedral de Santa Maria la Real de la Almudena and the Museo del Prado.
"The Plaza Mayor had literally everything you could imagine," wrote junior goal keeper Nick Shackelford in the Billikens' online blog of the trip. "The plaza had authentic Spanish cuisine, souvenir shops and cafés on every corner. This place was a melting pot of tourism and culture."
But the team didn't just sightsee. On their third day in the city, they took on Agrupación Deportiva Colmenar Viejo, a professional soccer club that consistently finishes at the top of its division. The Billikens played in the club's home stadium, which had the capacity to hold nearly 3,000 spectators. And although the team lost, 3-2, as junior midfielder Alex Sweetin wrote, the team "came out of the game with way more positives than negatives."
