It's already clear that the 2012 Make A Difference Day has some big goals to meet.

The Center for Service and Community Engagement estimates that nearly 3,700 volunteers will be needed for this year's event, scheduled to take place 8:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27.

Last year, 3,118 Saint Louis University volunteers worked at 130 sites in the community, making it the largest MADD in SLU's history and one of the largest collegiate days of service in the entire country.

"Make A Difference Day is a chance for our whole campus to come together and celebrate what makes us all Billikens: The desire to serve others," said Bobby Wassel, assistant director of the Center for Service and Community Engagement.

"Not only is it a celebration, it is also meant to be a springboard for members of the SLU community to become engaged in ongoing service, and to make every day 'Make A Difference Day,'" Wassel added.

Students, faculty, staff, parents, alumni and community members are encouraged to participate and help SLU meet its goal of making the 15th annual event the biggest one yet. Volunteer registration is now open at the Make A Difference Day website, and volunteers can sign up through Sunday, Oct. 14.

Participants are encouraged to register in groups of at least five members. Individual registration will also be available. A lunch and reusable water bottle with water will be provided.

This year, MADD is going green with the theme "Sustainability," and the Center for Service and Community Engagement will partner with the Center for Sustainability and the Missouri Botanical Garden for this endeavor.
