SLU Chapter of American Society of Civil Engineers Receives National Honor

In the spring of 2016, the student chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) recognized the Saint Louis University ASCE Chapter with a Certificate of Commendation. Only the top five percent of all ASCE student organizations earn this recognition.

Last year, SLU’s ASCE student chapter focused not only on increasing membership, but on striving to increase the value of the experience of its student members.

This group’s effort was acknowledged by Leslie Payne, ASCE’s director of student and younger member programs.

“The chapter’s accomplishments reflect the enthusiasm and hard work of the student officers and members, as well as the guidance of the faculty adviser,” Payne said.

Last year, SLU’s ASCE student chapter focused not only on increasing membership, but on striving to increase the value of the experience of its student members. The members offered many professional development opportunities and activities to broaden the understanding of civil engineering. By setting goals and outlining tactics, the group was able to achieve more than 90 percent of its goals.

The group attended conferences; brought in industry professionals as speakers; built and competed in concrete canoe competitions, steel bridge competitions and concrete bowling ball competitions. They also helped run a bridge-building competition for local high school students.

In addition to the academic activities, the group held social activities such as ice skating, city tours and trivia night and participated in service-related events such as SLU’s Make a Difference Day and Showers of Service.

“Last year was great!” said Michelle Bresnahan, chapter president. “I am thrilled that so many of our members will be back again to make this year even more successful.”
