Allsup Summer Entrepreneurship Academy

Event Details: July 29 - August 02, John and Lucy Cook Hall, 3674 Lindell Blvd, St. Louis, MO, 63108

The Center for Entrepreneurship at Saint Louis University's John Cook School of Business will host the 2013 Allsup Summer Entrepreneurship Academy Monday, July 29 through Friday, Aug. 2, at John and Lucy Cook Hall, 3674 Lindell Boulevard.

Students from the 2012 Allsup Summer Entrepreneurship Academy celebrate in Cook Hall.

Offered each summer since 2005, the week provides high school students (incoming freshmen to outgoing seniors) an opportunity to learn entrepreneurial concepts and principles, including how to start their own businesses.

The students come from around the country work together to explore, learn, develop and present innovative solutions to real world market needs.

The Allsup Summer Entrepreneurship Academy uses experiential learning, problem solving and case studies to educate young people on how to start and operate a business while instilling an understanding of the entrepreneurial mindset.

All students will take a field trip to a local business which correlates to their track selection. The teacher assigned to each track is also an entrepreneur. In addition to this wealth of experience, academy students will receive guidance from current SLU student business owners who are all members of the elite group Diamond in the Rough.

New to the 2013 Academy, students can choose to focus on one of four various entrepreneurship tracks: General Entrepreneurship, Tech Entrepreneurship, Family Business and Female Entrepreneurship. The track selection will dictate the field trip location and a panel discussion which analyzes the unique challenges faced by the particular brand of entrepreneurs.

Beyond the field trips, the main focus of the week is the opportunity for students to formulate an idea for their own business (if they don't already have one). With assistance from entrepreneurs, teachers and other mentors, academy members will be divided into equal teams, mingled across all track selections. The groups will work on their ideas through a number of breakout sessions covering topics of presentation skills, financial comprehension, marketing and sales. On Friday, a group of area entrepreneurs will come to SLU to see these teams "pitch" their idea and offer feedback. Prizes will be awarded to the top presenters.

The program is sponsored by SLU's Center for Entrepreneurship and Allsup Inc. with additional support from the Albrecht Family Foundation and the Coleman Foundation.

Full tuition for the academy is $495; however, generous scholarships are available based on high school GPA, extracurricular activities and financial need. An additional $200 discount is available for students related to SLU faculty, staff or alumni.

Interested high school students should contact Greg Davenport in the Center for Entrepreneurship at 314-977-3282 or davenpgm@slu.edu.

Higher purpose. Greater good.
