Campus Ministry Retreats Kicks Off with Urban Plunge
The Campus Ministry kicked off its year-long series of retreats this weekend with the Urban Plunge, which helps retreatants explore the inseparable link between faith and justice by "plunging" them into the reality of poverty and social injustice within the city of St. Louis.
On Saturday, 49 retreatants immersed themselves into the social and economic realities that contribute to urban poverty by providing service and learning about organizations throughout the city. One of the retreat's events included a presentation given by Let's Start, a program sponsored by St. Vincent De Paul parish dedicated to assisting women in transition from prison life to society.
In addition to working community service projects and the Let's Start presentation, the students listened to leaders of local social service agencies, community development organizations and the Catholic Worker community. They also spent time busting popular myths that perpetuate misunderstanding and fear, including the misperception that racism and segregation are things of the past.
