Teaching: Dr. Thanavaro is a tenured associate professor of nursing and the Associate Dean of Graduate Education. She previously served as the coordinator of the adult/gerontology nurse practitioner track where she led the curriculum changes needed to combine the adult and gerontology content. Dr. Thanavaro teaches in the adult/gerontology NP program and the DNP program and is actively involved in chairing DNP capstone projects. She has been an invited presenter at numerous national and international NP conferences with a focus on cardiovascular management.
Practice: Dr. Thanavaro is a Fellow in the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (FAANP) and maintains board certifications as an adult gerontology primary care and acute care NP. She has worked in the intensive care setting as a staff nurse, head nurse, and clinical nurse specialist in hospitals in Philadelphia and St. Louis. She was among the first cohort of DNPs who became certified as a Diplomat in Comprehensive Care (DCC) awarded by the American Board of Comprehensive Care. She is past president of the Saint Louis Nurses in Advanced Practice (STLNAP) and has served on national committees for the American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN) and The National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculities (NONPF). She maintains an active internal medicine practice at Washington University School of Medicine with Washington University Clinical Associates and routinely precepts NP students at Grant Medical Center.
Research and Scholarly Activities: Dr. Thanavaro is a reviewer for five nursing journals and is widely published on cardiovascular topics with a focus on evidence-based best practices. Her research informs risk reduction behaviors for women and heart disease.
Administration: Dr. Thanavaro oversees the five nurse practitioner options, the MSN-CNL option, the BSN-DNP and the Post Master's DNP programs and the Doctor of Philosophy program.
