Q. When is the deadline for applying? 

A. The deadline is March 1 for fall and August 1 for the spring semester.

Q. How long before I am notified if I am accepted?
A. Expect to be notified within 6-8 weeks of the application due date. Applicants are considered on a cohort basis as there are a finite number of openings in the program.

Q. What accreditation does Saint Louis University have?

Saint Louis University is fully accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. SLU has been continuously accredited since 1916.


The baccalaureate degree in nursing/ master's degree in nursing/ and Doctor of Nursing Practice at Saint Louis University is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (http://www.aacn.nche.edu/ccne-accreditation).

The School of Nursing is fully approved by the Missouri State Board of Nursing.

Prior to 2005, Saint Louis University School of Nursing was accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission from 1928 through 2006.

Q. What is the format of the program? 
A. The MSN-NP program is offered online.

Q. Is there a required campus visit?
A. Yes, two campus visits are required.  The first visit is a two day orientation immediately before the program begins. The second visit occurs during one of the clinical management courses. This visit is to evaluate the student's progress and to teach skills not acquired through online learning such as suturing.

Q. Are there clinical requirements?
A. Yes. The clinical hour requirement depends on the specialty and varies from 650 to 675 hours.

Q. What about transfer credits?
A. Course credit that is transferred from other schools is judged individually based on our courses and the course similarity via the syllabus. We will not accept a course in which less than a B grade is earned. A student must have  completed 6 hours of course work at Saint Louis University prior to applying for transfer of credit.

Q. Does the MSN-NP program prepare me to teach?
A. We do offer three nurse educator courses (6-7 credits total) that may be added to the basic plan of study (the Educator Option). An additional 3 credit hour course is also available (for a total of 9 credit hours) for those who wish to apply for national certification as a nurse educator.

Q. Do SLU BSN graduates have an advantage in the admission process?
A. While we welcome and encourage SLU BSN graduates to apply to the MSN-NP program, all students will be evaluated equally in the admission process.

Q. Is the GRE required?

A. No, the GRE is not required.

Q. Is an interview required?
A. An interview may be required. If required, the purpose of the interview is to assess "fit" between your career goals and the MSN-NP program at SLU. The interview also provides an opportunity for you to address questions you may have about the program. Phone interviews may be accepted.
