St. Louis Magazine Announces the Winner of the 2010 Excellence in Nursing Awards

April 23, 2010 - ST. LOUIS, MO - St. Louis Magazine is pleased to announce the winners of the inaugural Excellence in Nursing awards. At a reception Thursday, April 22, St. Louis Magazine Editor-in-Chief Stephen Schenkenberg and Contributing Editor Christy Marshall presented awards to 67 finalists who placed in the contest. The overall winner in each category was announced for the first time at the reception.

The Excellence in Nursing awards were presented to 67 finalists across 16 categories including Cardiovascular; Educator; Emergency Medicine; General Practice; Hospice; Home Health & Palliative Care; Intensive Care; Internal Medicine; Leadership; Long-Term Care; Neurology; Oncology; Orthopedics; Pediatrics; School; Surgery; and Women's Health. "The editors here are excited about introducing the Excellence in Nursing Awards to the St. Louis region," says Editor-in-Chief Stephen Schenkenberg. "We hear from many readers who enjoy our ongoing health coverage, from the annual Best Doctors feature to our wide-ranging Healthy Living series. This new project allows us to expand our focus while shining a light on a critical-though often unheralded-segment of the healthcare workforce."

St. Louis Magazine received 166 nominations for the contest. Those nominations were evaluated by the selection committee and the finalists were chosen. The selection committee of the 2010 Excellence in Nursing competition included: Jeanne M. Floyd, Executive Director of the American Nurses Credentialing Center; Anne G. Heine, Clinical Instructor at the University of Missouri-Columbia's Sinclair School of Nursing; Jill Kliethermes, CEO of the Missouri Nurses Association; and Diane Twedell, Nurse Administrator of Education and Professional Development at the Mayo Clinic.

In addition to the Excellence in Nursing awards presentation, the Chamberlain College of Nursing presented awards to the winners who received a perfect score in the evaluation by the selection committee. The six nurses who received a perfect score included: Marci Bailey, Washington University School of Medicine (Cardiovascular); Susan Hoffstetter, Saint Louis University School of Medicine and SLUCare (Women's Health); Lila Kertz, Washington University School of Medicine (Pediatrics); Mary Ann Lavin, Saint Louis University School of Nursing (Educator); and Mary Wood, Washington University School of Medicine (Pediatrics).

The overall winners in each category are profiled in a 10-page feature in the May issue of St. Louis Magazine, which was unveiled at the awards reception. The issue hits subscribers' mailboxes April 24 and newsstands April 30. St. Louis Magazine's inaugural awards reception was held at the Palladium Saint Louis. The event was sponsored by Budweiser Select, Chamberlain College of Nursing, Scrubs & Beyond, and Select 55.
