February was National Heart Month, and we kicked it off with Missouri Baptist Medical Center at the Heart the Family Health Fair. This is a free event hosted by MoBap and aims to help participants learn about heart health while encouraging participants to know their numbers.

We walked into a festively decorated hospital decked with red and white balloons; vender tables; two stages for cooking demonstrations and lectures; and tables with food samples. All of the dietetic interns were spread throughout the fair to showcase their expertise in certain areas. For example, the nutrition and physical performance interns worked the InBody Machines to evaluate attendee's body composition. Interns assisted by operating the InBody Machine and then interpreting the results with each participant.

The nutrition therapy interns met with attendees after they had their blood pressure, blood glucose, and cholesterol measured. At this station, each intern went over the results with the attendees and translated their numbers into dietary recommendations.

The culinary interns served some really yummy (and healthy!) snacks to attendees while the pediatric interns worked the kid's station. Kids were entertained with a build your own trail mix area and other fun, kid-friendly activities.

Many of us took turns and rotated through the different stations or walked around the fair. We got a lot of practice meeting with "clients," going over their results with them, and explaining how it all applies to their lifestyle and diet. The fair also hosted some other really cool events, such as presentations by cardiologists and a food demo by the St. Louis Ram's Dietitian. It was a great opportunity to be a part of this fair. Overall, this was a great experience for thirty-four aspiring dietitians!
