“And it’s ouuuuuuuuuuutta here!” That’s right folks. It’s baseball season again! Time to cheer for your favorite team (and since we are in St. Louis, I’ll put a word in for the National Champs of 2011, the Cardinals).

Although baseball season may not be year round, good nutrition should stay in our minds 365 days a year. And going to a game shouldn’t be an exception. Now some of you might be thinking….baseball games and healthy eating are two things that do NOT go together. But this doesn’t have to be the case! Here are a few tips for how to still enjoy the big game, but avoiding the big amount of calories.

  1. Fire up the grill!
One of the first things you might notice walking into a ballpark in the un-mistakable smell of the grill being fired up. Some of these items are actually lower in calories than you might think. For instance, a hotdog with ketchup is only about 315 calories, which might be a better choice than a hamburger. Another good option would be a grilled chicken sandwich versus a fried chicken sandwich
  2. That sweet treat
Looking for something sweet? A box of crackerjacks only has 120 calories and 2 grams of fat! Now that’s a homerun. Another good option for those with a sweet tooth would be frozen yogurt instead of the regular ice-cream or custard. And you can even get one of those cute little plastic hats they come in!

  4. That satisfying snack
Even if you’re just looking for a small snack, they can pack some big calories. If you’re making the choice between peanuts and popcorn, the better choice might be peanuts. While popcorn made at home is a great whole-grain snack, at a stadium it is filled with butter and oil and can have as many as 2,000 calories per box. Another good snack option would be a soft pretzel (minus the salt and cheese sauce). A bag of peanuts or a pretzel would leave you satisfied without weighing you down.

  6. Fill up BEFORE heading out
A way to not be tempted with all these tasty treats? Eat a balanced and healthy meal that fills you up before you get to the game. Not only will it save you calories, but also money!
  7. Now that you know how to battle the concession stand, you’re ready to sport your favorite jersey and cheer on your team!
