Freshen Up You Diet this Summer!

A United Nations health expert recently stated that unhealthy diets are now a greater threat to health than tobacco use. With summer being just around the corner, now is a perfect time to kick old habits and clean up your diet. Luckily, summer months bring beautiful, fresh produce into harvest and provide endless options for meals and snacks.

Never been to a Farmers' Market before? Summer provides the perfect opportunity to explore local Farmers' Markets and ask about different produce. Try the Schlafly Farmers' Market for great local dairy, eggs, and artisan breads on Wednesday. Try the Soulard Market, open daily Wednesday-Saturday, for seasonal produce and flowers. The family friendly Tower Grove Park Farmers' Market is open every Saturday.

Keep an eye out for dark greens such as spinach and kale, along with root vegetables like beets and radishes. Soon to follow, in late June/early July, are berries such as blackberries, blueberries, and raspberries, which are at their peak ripeness and are a tasty summer treat! Sweet corn is also a barbeque favorite and pairs well with juicy watermelon or steamed green beans.

Need quick meal ideas for all of your newly purchased produce? The Rachael Ray Magazine website has great recipes that emphasize seasonal foods along with additional tips for produce shopping during the summer.
Now get out there and freshen up your diet, today!

Higher purpose. Greater good.
