BLOG: Gardens to Tables Culinary Camp

Published: Tuesday, June 19, 2012

Since things are quiet during the summer months in regards to the SLU Dietetic Internship {well not behind the scenes, but in bloggyworld}, we thought it would be enjoyable to showcase the other things that the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics are involved with this summer.

Every summer, the Nutrition and Dietetics department holds a "Garden to Tables Culinary Camp". This 10 year old summer camp seems to be getting more and more attention every year for its distant uniqueness. This year the open spot have filled up quickly, and so far this summer the kids {and camp counselors} are having a blast! Some of our future interns {class of 2012-2013} are even camp counselors this year.

Here is a little synopsis of the program:

"Saint Louis University’s Gardens to Tables Culinary Camp is a week-long program engaging campers in gardening, cooking and nutrition activities. Campers prepare a variety of meals and work with professional chefs, registered dietitians, and master gardeners to learn principles of good nutrition, gardening and a healthy lifestyle. The camps are designed for children 7-12 with a special Teen’s Only Week (June 18-22) and an exciting new Junior-Chef Week for children 5-8 (July 9-13)."

"Campers journey to local farms, encountering first-hand sustainable local agriculture. Each camp includes a Disability Awareness Day, helping campers learn what is involved when someone has a disability – how they adapt to cook and garden independently."

Every week the camp leaders keep a blog up to date with daily pictures and activities! Go browse through all the fun stuff they are up to this summer. Enjoy!
