People want to live longer and healthier lives, and are counting on good nutrition. The dietetics professional helps consumers sort out the nutrition information they encounter. They are also the professionals who are trained to provide nutrition-related care, called medical nutrition therapy, to individuals with specific disease states. In fact, dietetics professionals apply their knowledge of foods and nutrition to many career settings. The goals of the profession include promoting health, the prevention and management of disease, and minimizing disability.
Employment of dietitians is expected to increase 10-20% through 2010 (US Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2002-2003). Between 2000 and 2010, the demand for higher-skilled culinarians is expected to increase 21-35% (US Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2002-2003).
