DETACHMENT 207 HISTORY

Institutional Historical Information

Parks CollegeSt. Louis University, a private university under Catholic and Jesuit auspices, traces its history to the foundation of the St. Louis Academy by the Right Reverend Louis William DuBourg, Bishop of Louisiana, in 1818. At Bishop DuBourg's request, the Society of Jesus took over direction of the school in 1827. This small Jesuit college received its charter as Saint Louis University in 1832, becoming the first university established west of the Mississippi River. The university settled at its present site on Grand in 1888.

Physically, the University is distributed over three main campuses. The Frost Campus is located in the Grand Boulevard midtown area and the Health Sciences Center Campus one-mile to the South. The third campus, the home of St. Louis University in Spain, is in Madrid. The latter offers opportunity for a study-year abroad. It also provides an integrated program of course work for Spanish students preparing to complete a baccalaureate degree on one of the St. Louis campuses.

Saint Louis University is classified as a Research Level II institution by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. The University enrolls more than 11,100 full and part-time students, including 1,000 foreign students from 80 countries. Some 93,000 alumni are engaged in a wide spectrum of professional pursuits throughout the world.

Detachment Historical Information

The history of the cadet corps at SLU begins with its roots at the old Parks College in Cahokia, IL, and started before the present ROTC system evolved. Parks College is the oldest federally approved aeronautical institution in the nation. Its founder, Oliver L. Parks, began operations in August 1927 and received the Air Agency Certificate #001 from the federal government in 1929. Since the summer of 1997 Parks College has belonged to the oldest university system west of the Mississippi – St. Louis University.

Parks College’s traditionally close ties with the military, particularly the Air Force, date back to the beginning of military aviation itself. For example, at the request of Mr. Parks’ personal friend, George H. H. (Hap) Arnold, Parks College assisted in the training of Army Air Force pilots during World War II. In fact, Parks College provided primary training for some 24,000 AAF pilots (one out of every ten), including 4,000 RAF fliers and thousands of mechanics. These achievements prompted President Harry S. Truman in 1947 to send Parks a personal letter recognizing the school’s achievements on its 20th anniversary. Mr. Parks also received “His Majesty’s Medal for Service” from the British.

Parks College’s Air Force ROTC program began shortly after the Air Force became a separate service in 1947. The cadet corps continued its proud tradition even through the anti-Vietnam Conflict era. In fact, the corps actually grew in size while other campuses were dropping ROTC from the curriculum.

Parks College continued its close association with the military, hosting the AFROTC detachment in the St. Louis and surrounding area. By 1997, the Parks campus in Cahokia was closed down and all academic instruction was transferred to St. Louis University. The corps is composed of cadets from three main campuses, St. Louis University, Washington University, and Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville. The corps also draws students from the University of Missouri at St. Louis, Belleville Area College, and McKendree College. Up until 1989, Detachment 206 was operational at the SIUE campus. However, as a consequence of budget reductions, the detachment was combined with the Det 207 at Parks.
