History

The Asian Student Coalition became a subgroup within the International Student Federation in the early nineties. No exact year has been confirmed because "prehistoric" ASC, as I'd like to call it was never written. It was mainly an oral tradition. Unfortunately, the actual founders of this organization is unknown, but before people started to associate me as the "founder" of ASC, I do not feel it is of service to ignore and forget the people who has provided a foundation for us to freely discuss our ideas and promote cultural awareness across the St. Louis community. It's a funny story how I became President and Member of Parliament of ASC back in the spring of 1999. Late in May, my cousin Ken Tan was the Member of Parliament and President between Fall 1998 and Spring 1999. He wanted Don Le to be the President and MP of ASC, but because he became the Executive Treasurer of ISF, the Constitution prohibits an officer of ISF to be an MP of ASC due to conflicts of interest in terms of finances. So, needless to say, I was not my cousin's first pick (but I love my cousin anyway). Without prior experiencing running a student organization in college, my cousin left me no documents to learn how to conduct such an organization. Therefore, I basically started with a blank slate. I learned the hard way, so to speak, of how to run an organization. I needed to learn the policies surrounding ISF, the procedures for proposals, and the school's policies surrounding publicity, reserving spaces for events, and fundraising. Despite all of the grunt work involved, I also realized the potential that can be developed if this organization runs as planned. The potential I envisioned is for ASC to be a forum for people to express their opinions about issues Asians/Asian Americans go through. In 1999-2000, the officers were:

MP/President: Janet Tang
Vice-President: Connie Tran
Webmasters: Connie Tran and Janet Tang
"Sanitary Engineer/Spirit Leader": Stanley Chang

In 2000-2001, the officers were:
MP: Tina Dewan
President: Janet Tang
Vice-President: Connie Tran
Secretary: Leila Somjee
Webmaster: Janet Tang

In 2001-2002
MP/President: Janet Tang
Vice-President of Public Relations: Thomas Kwong
Webmaster: Sanjeev Paramanathan
Secretary: Leila Somjee
Webmasters: Ricky Cheng and Janet Tang

In 2002-2003
President: Julie Nguyen
Vice President: Jenny San
Secretary: Richard Trojanski
MP/Treasurer: Sang Vong
Director of Alumni Relations/Fundraising: Janet Tang
Director of Programming: Beth Nguyen
Public Relations: Thomas Kwong

ASC has grown in maturity and in numbers. I believe the new name A.S.I.A. for Asian Students in Action will be a group that will continue to mature multidimensionally.
Before I got on board, no website or email address existed. Less than 10 people existed in ASC back in 1999. Now, over?28 people whether graduate or undergraduate?come to our meetings.??I?think life has something up her sleep because no one wants?remember her pocket-- a pocket of goodies.
