Awards GSA Brennan Summer Fellowship Awards **Please check back in January 2010 for updated information, deadlines, and applications. General Info Awards are given out annually during the spring semester . For each award, applicants must demonstrate how the award will facilitate their studies, academic development, or research in a manner that could not be met through another funding source, such as employment or an existing fellowship or assistantship. All awards will require the listing of any and all alternative sources of funding, which will be taken into account by the judging committee. Falsification of or failure to disclose this information will result in revocation of this funding award. Each award may be received only one time during a student’s academic career at St. Louis University. Application deadline: TBA - Check back in January 2010. Applications can be obtained after January 2010 either by asking your department Rep or by downloading them (see the end of each category description). Award Categories Fellowship for Exam Prep - $500 Award (2) In order to apply for this award, you MUST complete your exam by October 2010. To receive the $500 award for exam preparation, the student must have completed the coursework for the degree and be scheduled to take all written and oral comprehensive exams for their degree by October 2010. If exam date requirement is not met, the application will be disallowed. The GSA recognizes that the procedural requirements concerning exam schedules vary from department to department—to that end, the applicant must provide a signed letter from the department chair stating that the student is in the process of preparing for exams and that all pre-requisite conditions have been met. Additionally, applicants will be asked to briefly describe the exam process in their respective departments. Click here to download an exam award application. Fellowship for Overseas Conference Travel - $300 Award (3) In order to apply for this award, you MUST have completed conference travel between March 2009 & February 2010. To receive the $300 award for travel completed to an overseas conference, the student must have traveled between March 2009 and February 2010 to a conference location outside of the 50 U.S. states. In order to receive this award, students will have to provide proof of travel according to GSA Funding Guidelines for conference travel, as well as documentation of expenditures and funds already received for the travel. However, if a student has already submitted for and received travel reimbursement through GSA, no further documentation is necessary. If travel requirements are not met, the application will be disallowed. Additionally, applicants will be asked to briefly describe how the travel and conference experience contributed to their academic development, as well as their need for this financial support. Other Awards The following awards will be distributed at the Graduate School Pre-Commencement:Graduate Teaching Award – This award is intended for a graduate student who has demonstrated excellence in teaching, either as a Teaching Assistant (TA) or as the primary instructor of a course. Students or professors who have observed the instructor in the teaching sector may make nominations. Nominators will be asked to provide a typed letter indicating how the nominee has performed above others in the classroom. Click here to download a graduate teaching award application. Service Award – This award is intended for a graduate student who has demonstrated a high level of service to their department and/or the university community. Nominators will be asked to provide a typed letter describing the nominee’s commitment to the university. Click here to download a service award application. Mentorship Award – This award is intended for a professor who has inspired students and enhanced students’ graduate education. Nominators will be asked to provide a typed letter indicating the ways in which the nominee has improved students’ graduate careers. Click here to download a mentorship award application.
