Laila Thampy

Executive Vice President

Hometown: Saint Louis, MO

Leila Thampy is a senior at SLU, majoring in biology and minoring in english. She handles publicity for a number of other organizations, including: SLU Karate Club, Commuter Student Association, and Beta Beta Beta Honors Biological Society. She works part time as a medical assistant at St. Anthony's Hospital, in the "Endocrinology, Diabetes, & Metabolism Consultants" clinic. She spends her free time practicing martial arts, rearranging her surroundings, frequenting unique restaurants, exercising, and avidly reading books at Borders (which she never pays for). Laila was born in Houston, TX, and has since moved and now calls St. Louis home, having lived here for 15 years. Her parents are from Kerala, India, and came to America over 30 years ago. Since they do not speak Malayalam fluently, the only foreign words that come out of Laila's mouth are "spanking," "you fat woman," "I love you," and "I need to go poo-poo." The oldest girl of seven children, Laila's experience with undomesticated little children has helped form her skills for dealing with situations or disputes that may arise in the context of routine event planning.

Hometown: Poland

I was born and raised in Poland. I left home at the age 16 to begin preparing for my future career as an International Baccalaureate student. When I was 17 I was accepted into the Rotary International Youth Exchange program and spent a year in Florida as I continued my IB studies. As I left for my final year of high school in St. Clare’s Oxford I was notified that I had been named in “Who’s Who in American High Schools” I completed my IB studies and was accepted here at Saint Louis University. Since arriving here my closest friends have been international students. I believe we have a broader picture of the world and its people. We look to see what we have in common while others look for differences.

I have been an Executive Member of the International Student Federation since my freshmen year in college. This coming 2008-2009 year I would be serving on the Student Government Association as a link between international students and Saint Louis University.

Like most of the international students, this is my first year in America. I came here to experience the American life, but I also came here to fascinate everybody with the charm of foreign culture. My unceasable love for Chinese food made me choose "nutrition & dietetics" as my major.
