The Land Beneath the Stars

The land beneath the stars, dreaming
Of tiaras scarlet and jewels, redeeming
Moon-shadows and flame, freeing
Raw earth and dead bodies
From the grasp of man where cloth is bound
And justice lies gone without a sound

Now the lilacs grin in light
While the prophets take their flight
Nero could not scoff the flame
The living are dead in all but name

If God should come upon this land
With his city majestic and grand;
The sons of light have lost their names
No exodus would free their shames
From the pit of sin, where now does loom
The devil in his human tomb
