Social Justice Week

Saint Louis University Muslim Students' Association would like to invite you to Social Justice week. All events are in larger conjunction with Atlas Week at SLU going on the week of April 4th. Details about the individual events can be found below.

'It's All Good in the Hood: Demystifying the Hejaab (Part 1)'
TUESDAY, April 5
Time: 5:30-6:15 p.m.
Location: Room 253, Busch Student Center

As a part of ATLAS week's mission to spread awareness about a diverse issue of topics, we are orienting our event to educate non Muslims about modern issues in Islam. This involves a two-day event. Part 1 is gathering people who are interested in wearing the hijab and discuss what they feel about others who wear it, why they would like to wear it, etc. Student panelists will discuss how to wear the hijab, the mannerisms one should hold when wearing it, etc. Then hijabs will be distributed and we encourage as many non-Muslims to wear it as possible.

'It's All Good in the Hood: Demystifying the Hejaab (Part 2)'
WEDNESDAY, April 6
Time: 6:30-7:15 p.m.
Location: Busch Student Center, Room 173

Day 2, people wear the hijabs, and at during that afternoon, they will come together and discuss how people felt while wearing it, and what they learned. Student panelists will discuss the importance of the hijab.

'Unveiled'
WEDNESDAY, April 6
Time: 7:30-9 p.m.
Location: Busch Student Center, Room 173

This highly acclaimed one-woman contemporary play by Chicago writer-actress Rohina Malik will showcase the lives of five Muslim women in a post-9/11 world. It has received terrific reviews such as: "A compelling 70-minute piece rich with illuminating surprises, drawing the audience into worlds that are both unique and truly universal. It is terrifically entertaining.- Catey Sullivan, Chicago Examiner Rohina Malik is a Chicago-based playwright, actress and solo artist. She was born and raised in London, England, and draws upon her South Asian heritage to inspire her art. Rohina's highly acclaimed one-woman-play, Unveiled, had its world premiere at the 16th Street Theater, directed by Ann Filmer, where Rohina performed to sold-out houses. Unveiled will return to Chicago in March 2010 at the Victory Gardens Theater in partnership with 16th Street Theater.

Rains of Rahmah: Rejuvenating Our Emaan

SLU MSA would like to invite everybody to our 3rd annual winter conference Rains of Rahmah: Rejuvenating Our Emaan. The conference will be held from February 4-6 in the Busch Student Center.

Clearing the Air: Addressing Misconceptions About Islam

What do Muslims believe about Jesus? Why do Muslim women wear the hijab/headscarf? Come to this event to hear Muslim students clear up common misconceptions about Islam. Also, look for our table in the Busch Student Center all next week to fill out a survey about Islam and test your knowledge! Then, come to the event to see the results!

Sharing Our Stories: How I Embraced Islam

Local community members Dr. Charles Monfort, Rebecca Burns, and Daniel Freund each share their stories on how they found Islam and how it has affected their lives.

Finding Common Ground Among the Abrahamic Faiths with Dr. Jerald Dirks
October 28, 5:00PM - Busch Student Center 251
Dr. Jerald Dirks holds a Master's degree in Divinity from Harvard University and a Doctorate in Psychology from the University of Denver. He is the author of "The Cross and the Crescent: An Interfaith Dialogue between Christianity and Islam" (2001), and "Abraham: The Friend of God" (2002).
Refreshments will be served and A question-answer session will follow! This is not an event you want to miss!

Saint Louis University MSA and Washington University in St. Louis MSA will be co-sponsoring an Eid Dinner on Saturday, September 18th in the BSC Wool Ballrooms.
