About Phi Beta Kappa

Phi Beta Kappa is the oldest, most respected honoary society in the United States. The Society was founded at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia, on the 5th of December in 1776 and first extended its privileges to women on equal terms with men in 1875. Its mission is to foster and to recognize excellence in the liberal arts and sciences, especially at the baccalaureate level. Included among its current membership are President Bill Clinton, former President George Bush, Chief Justice William Rehnquist, Elizabeth Dole, Michael Crichton, Rita Dove, Stephen Sondheim, and Francis Ford Coppola. Saint Louis University's Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa was chartered in 1968.

Letters of invitation to membership in Phi Beta Kappa are generally sent out in March before Spring Break. If you do not receive an invitation to join and would like to inquire about PBK membership, please contact a member of the Executive Committee.

Criteria for Membership

Seniors must meet the following criteria by the end of the fall semester to be eligible for Phi Beta Kappa: 

  • Completiion of 105 credit hours towards a degree from the College of Arts and Sciences or the College of Philosophy and Letters.
  • Rank in the top 10% of the senior class with a GPA no lower than 3.65.
  • Completion of 9 hours of a foreign language, with at least 3 hours at the intermediate level,, or credited for the equivalent by Saint Louis University. English may be considered a second language if not the student's native language. Computer Science courses will not be considered as a foreign langauge.
  • Completion of two years of college preparatory mathematics or credited for the equivalent by Saint Louis University; this usually means completion of mathematics through College Algebra.

 

Juniors must meet the following criteria by the end of the fall semester to be eligible for Phi Beta Kappa:

  • Completiion of 75 credit hours towards a degree from the College of Arts and Sciences or the College of Philosophy and Letters.
  • Rank in the top 5% of the senior class with a GPA no lower than 3.75.
  • Completion of 9 hours of a foreign language, with at least 3 hours at the intermediate level,, or credited for the equivalent by Saint Louis University. English may be considered a second language if not the student's native language. Computer Science courses will not be considered as a foreign langauge.
  • Completion of two years of college preparatory mathematics or credited for the equivalent by Saint Louis University; this usually means completion of mathematics through College Algebra.
