FAQ'S ABOUT RAINBOW ALLIANCE AT SLU

> DO I HAVE TO BE GAY, LESBIAN, BISEXUAL, OR TRANSGENDERED TO BE A MEMBER?

No. And gay, straight or questioning, you have a place in the organization.

> DO I HAVE TO BE "OUT" TO BE IN THE GROUP?

No. Members choose to share as much or as little of themselves as they would like. And our members keep all that goes on in the meetings, including who attended the meetings, in confidence.

> WILL MY NAME BE PUBLISHED?
No. We keep no records of who attends our meetings.

> HOW MANY MEMBERS ARE THERE?

Rainbow Alliance doesn't keep an official membership list to ensure students confidentiality. We are in contact with over 150 people via our e-mail list. Not everybody is comfortable enough to come to meetings, which is fine, average attendance is usually 15-20 students.

> WILL MY EMAIL ADDRESS BE PUBLISHED?

Though we send group emails, the list remains private and confidential – and neither our members or non-members have access to its contents.

> WHEN ARE MEETINGS HELD?
The meetings are usually weekly, but it may be more or less frequent depending on the events scheduled. They usually fall on Monday nights at 9:00pm in the Bush Student Center.  Check the opening page for updated meeting information.

> WHAT GOES ON IN MEETINGS?

During the meetings we:

  • Organize events, whether they be activist/educational or social.

  • Discuss current issues facing GLBT individuals.

  • Also, before and after the meetings there is time for members to socialize.

> ARE THERE ANY COSTS?
No. To protect the privacy of the members there is no membership list and therefore no membership dues.

> WHAT KIND OF EVENTS DO YOU HOLD?

We have done and look forward to doing in the future many different types of events.

Educational/activist events include:

  • National Coming Out Day

  • National Day of Silence

  • Hosting movie nights

  • Panel discussions

  • Literature hand outs

  • Hosting lectures

Our social activities include:

  • Trips to local coffee houses

  • Meeting with other college GLBT student groups

  • Joint large programs with local college GLBT groups

  • Attending the National GLBT Jesuit College & University Conferences

Of course, the events and activities are chosen by the group, and the number of activities done in a particular year is dependent on the effort of the members.

> IS THE BILLIKEN GAY?
Actually, he prefers the term jovial. Although he does wink at both boys and girls.
