The Sigma Chi House

Our Chapter is very lucky. We are the only fraternity at Saint Louis University to have a House. The active brothers as well as our outstanding alumni have put a lot of time and effort into making the House a great place to live. We have recently repaved the parking lot and driveway, built a deck in the rear, and constructed a new privacy fence and security gate. During summer 2001 we were honored with the '00-'01 Risk Management Award from the Sigma Chi Foundation which comes with a monetary award of $6,000. The money was used to rewire the House and update other electrical needs. This award symbolizes our responsibility with the House so we can be sure that the Sigma Chi Badge will continue to mark the building's facade for many years to come. The House means so much to our chapter as not only a place to live , but a somewhere all of us can hang out and have fun.

Current House News

The Risk Management Award money was used to update the House's electric.  New lights were also put on the stairs and exit signs were installed all over the house. Habitat for Humanity moved in next door to us and did an excellent job fixing up their property.  Some real estate specialists now value the House and the property to be over half of a million dollars.

House History

The exact date the house was completed is unknown, but we do know that shortly after the house was completed on January 5, 1904 its permit was issued. It was common practice back then to issue a permit after the building was finished. The price of its construction was $7000. The Carriage house is slightly younger than the House; its permit was issued on February 26, 1904 and its cost was $1000. The architect for both structures was Henry Frein. A one story coal shed, although no longer in existence, was also part of the property. On August 16, 1993 the House and property officially became owned by the Theta Iota chapter of Sigma Chi. In the summer of 1999 a new deck was added to the rear of the structure followed by a new driveway and parking lot in the summer of 2001 and a new privacy and security gate in January 2002. Future improvements planned include a security system, chapter room in the Carriage house, and the entire restructuring and refurbishing of the interior.
