For a number of years prior to 1986, Fr. George Aschenbrenner
presented two series of conferences annually, on "Formation" and
the other on "The Vows," to the members of the Institute of
Religious Formation at Saint Louis University.
Participants in this program were priests, sisters, and brothers
from all over the globe, representing many and varied religious
congregations and dioceses as well as very diverse personal,
national, cultural and ethnic backgrounds, a microcosmic mirror
of the Church in the modern world.
Most of them were preparing to do formation work within their
own communities. They considered the subject matter of these
conferences to be the primary reason for their year-long course of
special studies, and their evaluations of the whole program ranked
Fr. Aschenbrenner's talks as the most effective workshops of the
year. They described his presentations as combining "consummate
skill, vision, wisdom, eloquence, and practical advice."
Addressing the issues of personal growth and formation in
religious life to such a group at this time in the history of the
Church would be no small challenge to most spiritual
theologians, no matter how extensive and competent their
qualifications and experience might be. Fr. Aschenbrenner has
readily accepted that challenge in these talks. He has not backed
down from addressing the most complex and difficult questions
which vocation decisions, religious life formation, and
fidelity to the vows raise today.
