Civil Engineering

Saint Louis University's undergraduate major in civil engineering prepares you to practice your skills in the real world by using project-based, hands-on learning methods. There is also an accelerated Bachelor of Science to Master of Science option available.

SLU's student chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) is recognized among the top five percent of chapters in the country. The group participates in national concrete canoe, steel bridge and concrete bowling ball competitions.

Major in Civil Engineering

Students in the civil engineering degree program at SLU's Parks College of Engineering, Aviation and Technology are introduced to computer-aided design and other state-of-the-art-computational techniques during their freshman year.

Our civil engineering students learn problem-solving techniques throughout their undergraduate careers, culminating in a two-semester capstone design sequence during which you'll become aware of the impact of design decisions, not only on the technical aspects of design but on society as a whole.

Coursework incorporates the latest industry trends, as you explore three primary areas of focus:

  • Green design and environmental engineering
  • Infrastructure design, evaluation and restoration
  • Transportation planning, analysis and design

Competitive summer internships and cooperative education programs are available. SLU's civil engineering students also are able to pursue independent study on a civil engineering topic under the direction of a faculty member.

The Army Corps of Engineers, Black and Veatch, BSI Constructors, Burns and McDonnell, EXXON, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, and the U.S. Air Force, Army and Navy are just a few of the places where SLU's civil engineering graduates have found employment.

Admission Requirements

A cumulative 3.00 high school GPA is recommended for freshmen applicants and 2.70 college GPA for transfer applicants.

We recommend an ACT composite score of 24 or higher (minimums of 22 in English, 24 in mathematics, 22 in reading comprehension and 22 in scientific reasoning), or a SAT composite score of 1160 and a SAT math sub score of 620. (If your SAT scores predate 2016, a SAT composite score of 1100 or higher with a SAT math sub score of 600 will be accepted.)

Fifteen total units of high school work are recommended: three or four units of English; four or more units of mathematics including algebra I and II, geometry and precalculus; three or four units of science including general science, introduction to physical science, earth science, biology, physics or chemistry; two or three units of social sciences including history, psychology or sociology; and three units of electives.

Program Educational Objectives

Program educational objectives are broad statements that describe what graduates are expected to attain within a few years of graduation. The program objectives are that our graduates will:

  • Be employed as engineers or be enrolled in engineering or professional graduate school;
  • Demonstrate their commitment to life-long learning and professional development through seeking professional licensure, pursuing graduate studies or participating in other professional continuing education activities;
  • Advance into leadership roles in their profession and in service to their communities; and
  • Create design solutions that address economic, social, and environmental factors in their professional engineering practice.

Student Outcomes

Student outcomes describe what students are expected to know and be able to do by the time of graduation. The civil engineering program is designed to achieve the following student outcomes:

  1. an ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science and engineering
  2. an ability to design and conduct experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret data
  3. an ability to design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs within realistic constraints such as economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health and safety, manufacturability and sustainability
  4. an ability to function on multidisciplinary teams
  5. an ability to identify, formulate and solve engineering problems
  6. an understanding of professional and ethical responsibility
  7. an ability to communicate effectively
  8. the broad education necessary to understand the impact of engineering solutions in a global, economic, environmental, and societal context
  9. a recognition of the need for, and an ability to engage in life-long learning
  10. a knowledge of contemporary issues
  11. an ability to use the techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice
  12. apply knowledge of four technical areas appropriate to civil engineering
  13. explain basic concepts in management, business, public policy, and leadership; and explain the importance of professional licensure

Solid modeling using state-of-the-art computer software is introduced during the freshman year of SLU's civil engineering curriculum, followed by structural analysis and fluid flow analysis software as you advance.
