Parks College Minors

Pursued in addition to your undergraduate major at Saint Louis University, minors let you explore an interest or add expertise that can make you more attractive to future employers.

Minors require fewer credit hours than a major but still have established curriculum and requirements that help build your knowledge of a certain area. Parks College of Engineering, Aviation and Technology offers minors in the following areas:

Aerospace Engineering

The aerospace engineering minor is open to students pursuing a bachelor’s degree in aviation science, mathematics, computer science, physics, electrical or computer engineering, or biomedical engineering programs.

This minor requires at least 18 credits of coursework, including AENG 2000: Introduction to Aeronautics and Astronautics, and at least five AENG and ESCI courses at the 2000 level or above (beyond the requirements for your major). You must earn a C or better in all AENG/ESCI courses.

If a minor in aerospace engineering interests you, consult with an aerospace and mechanical engineering faculty member to discuss the required courses and prerequisites. The completion of a minor in aerospace engineering must be certified by the chair of the aerospace and mechanical engineering department as part of the graduation check.

Mechanical Engineering

The mechanical engineering minor is open to students enrolled in SLU’s aviation science, mathematics, computer science, physics, electrical and computer engineering or biomedical engineering undergraduate programs.

Requirements consist of at least 18 credits of coursework, including MENG 2000: Introduction to Design, and at least five MENG and ESCI courses at the 2000 level or above (beyond the requirements for your major). You must earn a C or better in all MENG/ESCI courses.

If you are interested in minoring in mechanical engineering, contact an aerospace and mechanical engineering faculty member to discuss the required courses and prerequisites. The completion of a minor in aerospace engineering must be certified by the chair of the aerospace and mechanical engineering department when the student prepares for graduation.

Biomedical Engineering

The minor in biomedical engineering requires 18 credits of coursework, including a course in physiology and at least five biomedical engineering courses. At least three of the biomedical engineering courses must be at the 4000 level, and all courses must be 2000 level or above.

Normally, each course is three credit hours and may include review sessions and lab projects. The grades in all the biomedical engineering courses must be C or better.

To begin a minor in biomedical engineering, file a minor in BME plan with the Department of Biomedical Engineering after meeting with one of its faculty members to discuss courses and prerequisites. This form serves as a planning tool, not a contract, and will be on file with the biomedical engineering department and with your academic adviser in your major area.

In the final semester, the same form will serve as a graduation check with the dean’s office. The completion of a minor in biomedical engineering must be certified by the chair of the department when the student prepares for graduation.

Flight Science

Our flight science minor is designed for students who are not majoring in flight science but who are interested in obtaining flight certificates and ratings. After completing the minor, you will be able to obtain a private pilot certificate, an instrument rating, a commercial pilot certificate and an multiengine rating.

To enroll, you must possess a Class II FAA medical certificate and be able to comply with Transportation Security Administration requirements.

The flight science minor consists of 19 credit hours, which includes flight and ground instruction courses. The following courses are required:

  • FSCI 1150: Flight 1 (Two credit hours)
  • FSCI 1250: Basic Flight Foundations (Three credit hours)
  • FSCI 1550: Flight 2 (Two credit hours)
  • FSCI 2150: Flight 3 (Two credit hours)
  • FSCI 2250: Instrument Flight Foundations (Three credit hours)
  • FSCI 2550: Flight 4 (Two credit hours)
  • FSCI 2650: Navigation Flight Foundations (Three credit hours)
  • FSCI 3550: Flight 5 (Two credit hours)

Please note that additional fees apply to all flight courses; contact the contact the Department of Aviation Science for current rates. This minor is not available to online or distance-learners.

Air Traffic Control

Catering to the growing demand for air traffic controllers, SLU offers a minor in air traffic control that provides you fundamental industry knowledge and technical competency. You will learn through a mix of classroom instruction that includes practicing professional air traffic controllers, computer-based instruction and air traffic control laboratory simulation. Our air traffic control lab offers you hands-on experience through the simulation of an air traffic control tower environment, radar facilities and communication with pilots.

The air traffic control minor consists of 16 credit hours:

  • ASCI 1020: Introduction to Air Traffic Control
  • ASCI 2020: Air Traffic Control Operations and Procedures
  • ASCI 3030: Basic Air Traffic Control: Tower and Radar
  • ASCI 3040: Advanced Air Traffic Control: Tower and Radar
