Treatment for infants, children, and adolescents with gastrointestinal and liver disease
SLUCare pediatric gastroenterologists and hepatologists provide roughly half of the pediatric GI services in the greater St. Louis region. We care for infants, children and adolescents with a variety of gastrointestinal and liver diseases, conducting 6,000 outpatient visits, 3,000 inpatient hospital days and more than 1,300 endoscopic procedures per year.
Our pediatric gastroenterologists follow more than 150 patients with Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis annually, as well as many patients with chronic liver dysfunction and metabolic diseases. We also care for infants and children with short bowel syndrome, many of whom have had small bowel and liver transplants.
SLUCare has a highly successful liver transplant program for infants and children with chronic liver disease, as well as for the treatment of acute fulminant liver failure. We have performed more than 75 liver transplants over the past 20 years with outcomes at, or above, national benchmarks.
We also work with children who have nutritional disorders, or other chronic, non-gastrointestinal diseases that impact their feeding, nutrition and growth. Our pediatric weight management program, a novel multidisciplinary approach to the treatment of overweight children and adolescents, is frequently featured in local and national media reports on the epidemic of pediatric obesity.
Our specialists work collaboratively with other experts ensuring your child the best possible care. We team with allergy experts on the evaluation and management of food allergies and eosinophilic GI disease, with pulmonary experts regarding the contribution of GERD to asthma and respiratory disease, and with neonatologists on issues including infantile feeding, liver dysfunction and GERD.
