Treatment for children with blood disorders and cancer
SLUCare hematologists and oncologists provide a full range of clinical services to children and adolescents with blood disorders and cancer. Our specialists provide inpatient services at a four-patient hematopoietic stem cell transplantation unit, as well as outpatient services at the Bob Costas Cancer Center at SSM Cardinal Glennon Children's Medical Center.
We offer consultations for new patients and ongoing clinical care for patients with blood disorders or cancer, chemotherapy infusions, and blood component transfusions. Our SLUCare physicians are experts in the following areas:
- Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation
- Sickle cell anemia/hemoglobinopathies
- Long-term follow-up
SLUCare hematologists and oncologists are active participants in the Children's Oncology Group and the Center for International Blood and Marrow Transplant Research. Ours is one of the founding groups of the Neuroblastoma and Medulloblastoma Translational Research Consortium, which is actively investigating innovative approaches to the treatment of childhood cancer.
In addition, SLUCare hematologists and oncologists participate in several national and pharmaceutical company-sponsored studies of hemostasis and sickle cell disease. We also collaborate with the St. Louis Cord Blood Bank. The number of cord blood units donated for transplant continues to grow each year, and the bank remains one of the largest such programs in the country.
