Where is SLU?
Saint Louis University is located near downtown St. Louis in the heart of historic Midtown, the city's arts and entertainment district. The area is home to many of the city's premier cultural attractions, including the Fox Theatre, St. Louis Symphony Orchestra and St. Louis Black Repertory Company.

What is the campus like?
Highlighted by historic buildings, fountains, statues, trees, flowers and lush grass, SLU's picturesque urban campus provides a beautiful and safe atmosphere for students, parents, employees and visitors. The campus also features a park with walking trails and reflection ponds as well as Cupples House, a restored mansion listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
How many students are there?
Saint Louis University educates 11,112 students. There are 7,086 undergraduate, 1,881 graduate and 2,145 professional students studying at SLU. Of the student population, 56 percent are female; 44 percent are male. All 50 states and more than 73 foreign countries are represented in the University's student body.
How old is SLU?
Established in 1818, Saint Louis University was the first institution of higher education founded west of the Mississippi River and the second Jesuit university in the nation. It was the first university to have a graduate school in this vast region and the first to begin schools of philosophy, divinity, medicine, law and business.
Who is SLU's president?
University president and Jesuit priest Lawrence Biondi, S.J., became SLU's 31st president in 1987. He has committed vast University resources to academics, student scholarships and financial aid, faculty research and state-of-the-art technology. He also has upgraded and modernized University buildings and has revitalized the surrounding campus environment.

What is a Billiken?
The Billiken has been called one of the most unusual college mascots in the country. Designed and manufactured as a bank and statuette, the Billiken was the national rage as a good luck charm for a short period in the early 1900s. The story goes that a local sports writer and a cartoonist decided that SLU football coach John Bender resembled the Billiken. The team soon became known as Bender's Billikens and the name stuck.

For prospective students there is a custom-designed day with opportunities to meet with an admission counselor and current Saint Louis University students, attend a class and tour campus.
Can I study abroad?
Saint Louis University offers fantastic opportunities to study overseas. In 1969, the University established a campus in Madrid, Spain. The first freestanding campus operated by an American university in Europe, the Madrid campus is recognized by Spain's higher education authority as an official foreign university, the first U.S. institution ever so recognized. There are more than 830 SLU students studying abroad this year.
What is the average class size?
Saint Louis University strives to provide the lowest student-to-teacher ratio possible and has hired a number of new professors in recent years to lower its class sizes. The average undergraduate class size is 22; the student-to-teacher ratio is 13:1.
How many majors are there?
There are more than 75 undergraduate majors to choose from at Saint Louis University -- from accounting to theological studies and everything in between. SLU features a number of special academic programs as well, including Micah House, a nationally recognized program for students who want to make a difference in the neighborhoods surrounding the University.

What is campus housing like?
More than 3,400 students, including the majority of freshmen, live on campus. SLU offers many on-campus housing options, including newly renovated dorm rooms and the popular Village Apartments. All of the University's residence halls have been upgraded as part of Project SLU2000, a five-year, $100-million initiative to improve academics, housing and information systems. The improvements include air conditioning and new safety features.
When does school begin?
Traditional undergraduate classes for the spring 2002 semester begin Monday, Jan. 14. The tentative start date for fall 2002 is Monday, Aug. 26 (this date is subject to change).

How do I obtain a transcript?
Anyone who has ever attended Saint Louis University may obtain a transcript. All requests must be submitted in writing and may be dropped at the office of the registrar in Room 22 of DuBourg Hall, 221 N. Grand Blvd. Call 314.977.1200.
