Theology Professor Garners Ring Award

Ben Asen, Ph.D.

One of Saint Louis University’s most prestigious teaching awards has been awarded to a professor who once found himself on a much different career path.

Dr. Bernhard “Ben” Asen, associate professor in the department of theological studies, has received the 2004 Ring Award. Presented annually since 1966, the award recognizes an outstanding faculty member as chosen by members of Alpha Sigma Nu, the Jesuit honor society. The award is the only student-sponsored teaching award that encompasses all schools of the University.

The award was established to honor Nancy McNeir Ring, the University’s first dean of women, who was known for her devotion to the welfare of students. Recipients demonstrate a special dedication to students both inside and outside the classroom, a recurring theme in nominating letters for Asen.

“It was obvious to me from my first day of class with Dr. Asen that his students are his first priority,” one student wrote. “Dr. Asen makes himself fully available to any student who wishes to talk to him before or after class. … I believe this kindness and concern is what separates Dr. Asen from other faculty members. His approachability can be summarized by what his office hours sign says: ‘Just knock.’ ”
