Professional Notes: March 2014

NANCY BELL (Theatre) was named Playwright in Residence 2014-2016 at the Shakespeare Festival St. Louis. She has written two plays for the Festival's successful Shakespeare in the Streets project, both of which were critically acclaimed and nominated for St. Louis Theatre Circle Awards.

ELIZABETH BLAKE (Russian) had an article, "Portraits of the Siberian Dostoevsky by Poles in the House of the Dead," reprinted in Nineteenth Century Literary Criticism, ed. Michael Katz (Layman Poupard Publishing, 2013). In January 2014, Blake presented "Tolstoian Economy and Dostoevskian Expansiveness in the Engagement of the Polish Question in Anna Karenina and Brat'ia Karamazovy," at the AATSEEL National Conference in Chicago.

JENNIFER BUEHLER, PH.D. (Education) presented research at the following meetings:

  • "Reaching Readers With the Newest Young-Adult Literature Award Winners" and "Eight Great [Censored] American Novels" at the National Council of Teachers of English in Boston.
  • "'I Want Something for Myself': How Dropout Youth Construct New Identities Through Language Interactions," at the American Educational Research Association, San Francisco, Calif.

Jennifer also published the following articles:

  • Buehler, J., Plumb, D., & Walsh, J. (2013). "Young adult literature book awards: A guide for newcomers to the field." The ALAN Review, 40(3), 63-74.
  • Buehler, J. (2013). "There's a problem, and we've got to face it": How staff members wrestled with race in an urban high school. Race Ethnicity and Education, 16(5), 629-652.

Buehler began her fifth year as host of a monthly young adult literature podcast for ReadWriteThink.org, a partnership between the National Council of Teachers of English and the International Reading Association. Recent episodes include "International Books for Teens," "Fairy Tale Retellings," "Teens and Trauma," and "A Conversation with Judy Blume."

DANNIELLE JOY DAVIS, PH.D. (Education) published the co-authored article, "Who's Got Next: SOTA's KEMET Academy as a Model to Improve the Community College to Ph.D. Pipeline" in the refereed Journal of Negro Education (82(3), Summer 2013). She also presented the work "Poetic Voice in Higher Education" at the Midwest Popular Culture Association (MPCA) in St. Louis with SLU students Thu Do and Cammie Willis.

JOSEPH DELUCIA, D.O. (Emergency Medicine) has accepted medical control of Gateway Ambulance. Gateway Ambulance provides BLS and ALS services for the greater St. Louis Metropolitan Area. Multiple local districts depend on Gateway for back up 911 support. In addition, they provide bariatric and pediatric transports.

UTHAYASHANKER EZEKIEL, PH.D. (Clinical Laboratory Science) was awarded a President's Research Fund grant on the project titled, "Targeting epigenetics for colon cancer prevention by phytochemicals." Ezekiel's grant focuses on the effect of diet-derived phytochemicals on colon cancer cell proliferation. Phytochemicals are found in foods such as whole grains, vegetables, beans, fruits and herbs.

Research by ANASTASIOS KABURAKIS, PH.D. (Management) was recently published in the Journal of Sports Economics under the title "Sports economics on trial." Vol. 14, Iss. 4, 389-400

CLAUDIA KARAGOZ, PH.D. (Italian) has published an article, "Motherhood Revisited in Francesca Comencini's Lo spazio bianco" in Italian Women Filmmakers and the Gendered Screen, edited by Maristella Cantini. 103-119. New York: Palgrave Macmillan, 2013. She also collaborated on an article on titled "Contributions by Colleagues Attending the Roundtable Panel" in Renga, Dana and Allison Cooper's "Italy's Other Mafias in Italian Film, and Television: A Roundtable." The Italianist: Film Issue 33:2 (2013): 222-224.

LAUREN LANDFRIED was featured in the March member spotlight on the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics' Public Health/Community Nutrition Practice Group website

DAVID MECONI, S.J. (Theological Studies) spoke at the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops on March 15. He served as the representative of the Academy of Catholic Theology (ACT).

JEAN-LOUIS PAUTROT, PH.D. (French) delivered a paper titled "L'Histoire naturelle de Pascal Quignard" at the International Colloquium "Histoire naturelle des animaux dans la littérature de langue française (XXe-XXIe siècles)" in Paris, Université Sorbonne-Nouvelle-Paris 3, France (Feb 5-7, 2014). He also published two articles: "Les havres de Pascal Quignard" in Les Lieux de Pascal Quignard (actes du colloque du Havre) and "La soucoupe à secrets", an autobiographical piece on the role that music has played in his life, which appeared in the 2014 issue of Une Larme du diable (Brest, France), an interdisciplinary journal devoted to music and sound.

VIOLAINE WHITE, PH.D. (French) presented a paper, "‘Accumule, puis distribue' : L'Anticapitalisme de René Char" at the 20th and 21st Century French and Francophone Studies International Colloquium in New York on March 6. White also organized a panel at the conference, "La poésie à l'ère de la mondialisation: Ecopoétique de 1945 à nos jours."

JULIE WOLTER (Health Sciences) was named chair of the American Health Information Management Association's Fellowship Committee. The Fellowship program is a program of earned recognition for American Health Information Management Association members who made significant and sustained contributions to advancement of the health information management discipline through meritorious service, excellence in professional practice, excellence in HIM education and advancement of the profession through innovation and knowledge sharing. Wolter earned her fellowship status in 2008.

GRIGORIY YABLONSKY, PH.D. (Chemistry), RICHARD STECKEL (Aviation Science), DAMON LERCEL, PH.D. (Aviation Science), MANOJ PATANKAR, PH.D. (Aviation Science) and John Farnan (Junior) had their paper "Flight delay performance at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport" published in the Journal of Airline and Airport Management.
