Social Work/Deaconess Studies

Saint Louis University, together with Concordia Seminary, offers a dual-degree in social work and theology that allows students to earn both a Master of Social Work and Master of Arts with a major in spiritual care for deaconess studies.

About the Program

This dual-degree program provides the framework, skills and resources for church workers to engage in practical social work, including internships that may be fulfilled in connection with a Lutheran social service agency.

Curriculum and Program Details
  • Advanced Clinical Social Work Practice
  • Human Behavior and the Social Environment Part II
  • Concentration Integrative Seminar
  • Clinical Practicum II
  • Clinical Practicum III
  • 15 credits of adviser-approved social work electives

In place of 12 credits of social work electives, students in this dual degree program take 12 credits of Concordia courses counting toward the M.A.

Some field practicum experiences may satisfy the requirements of both degrees simultaneously. For a field experience to count as a social work practicum, it must meet all the requirements of SLU’s social work practicum, including supervision from a social worker.

You must set up all field experiences as social work practicum experiences with the SLU M.S.W. field education office to receive practicum credit.
