Social Work/Theology

Saint Louis University, together with Concordia Seminary, offers a dual-degree graduate program in social work and theology.

About the Program

Graduates of this dual-degree program earn a Master of Social Work with a clinical concentration through SLU and and a Master of Arts in theology from Concordia Seminary. Students gain knowledge and skills in blending Lutheran faith beliefs, spirituality and religious service with the professional practice of social work.

Curriculum and Program Details
  • Advanced Clinical Social Work Practice
  • Human Behavior and the Social Environment Part II
  • Clinical Practicum II
  • Concentration Integrative Seminar
  • Clinical Practicum III
  • 15 credits of adviser-approved social work electives.

In place of 12 credits of social work electives, students in this dual degree program will take 12 credits of theology courses.

Some field practicum experiences may satisfy the requirements of both degrees simultaneously. For a field experience to count as a social work practicum, it must meet all the requirements of SLU’s social work practicum, including supervision from a social worker.

You must set up all field experiences as social work practicum experiences with the SLU M.S.W. Field Education Office to receive practicum credit.
