About the Program

SLU’s graduate program in educational foundations considers five areas: scholarship and knowledge, intellectual inquiry and communication, community building, leadership and service, and spirituality and values. SLU’s teacher education programs are approved by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, and the School of Education is accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation.

Master's Curriculum and Program Details

SLU’s M.A. program in educational foundations requires 32 credit hours of coursework, including at least six credit hours of research consisting of “EDR-5400: Qualitative Research Methods” and either “EDR-5600: General Research Methods for Educators” or “EDR-5100: Introduction to Inferential Statistics for Educators.” 

At the end of the program, you, in consultation with your adviser, will prepare a theme paper on a topic related to your coursework. You will also complete a one-hour oral examination based on the theme paper and completed coursework. 
Ed.D. Curriculum and Program Details

SLU’s Doctor of Education degree program prepares you for leadership positions in educational institutions. Our practical, problem-oriented program is shaped largely by career intentions that do not call for a strong research emphasis.

You will take a minimum of 42 credit hours of coursework beyond the master's degree, including an advanced research course. You will then complete written and oral exams, followed by four credit hours of project research.

Ph.D. Curriculum and Program Details

SLU’s doctorate in educational foundations emphasizes the tools of research and the interplay of theory and practice in education. You will take a minimum of 42 credit hours beyond the master's degree, including 12 credit hours of dissertation research and three advanced research courses.

At the end of the course credit hours, you will complete written and oral exams and then take 12 credit hours of dissertation research. A public oral defense of a dissertation proposal and a final dissertation are required to complete the program.

Possible career paths for someone with a graduate degree in educational foundations include curriculum coordinator, teacher educator, educational outreach coordinator, nonprofit specialist, special educator or adult educator.

Applicant Criteria

Students should possess above-average GPA, sufficient GRE or GMAT scores, and sufficient TOEFL scores (for international applicants).


Applicants must have completed 18 hours of upper-division undergraduate coursework in education or related areas approved by the school.

Ed.D., Ph.D.

Applicant must have a master's degree in education and complete six credit hours of graduate research coursework as a prerequisite for the doctoral programs. If you do not have some or all of these credit hours, you may take them while pursuing your doctorate, in addition to the program coursework.

Requirements for International Students

Application Deadlines

Domestic students should apply for the fall semester by July 1, for the spring semester by Nov. 1 and for the summer semester by April 1. International students should apply for the fall semester by May 1, for the spring semester by Oct. 1 and for the summer semester by Feb. 1. 

Students who want to be considered for an assistantship should apply by Feb. 1.
