Saint Louis University's undergraduate degree in aeronautics with a concentration
in flight science is the only degree of its kind offered at a Jesuit university. At
SLU, you’ll learn to fly in some of the world's most advanced light aircraft — the
Diamond DA-20, the Piper Arrow with Avidyne Entegra integrated flight deck, the Piper
Seminole and the Cirrus SR20 with Garmin Perspective — and further your studies in
a state-of-the-art Canadair Regional Jet-200 simulator.
Major in Aeronautics/Flight Science
Flight science courses at SLU include a stipulated number of flight or simulator hours
using Parks College's varied fleet of aircraft.
You'll learn to fly at SLU's Center for Aviation Science at the nearby St. Louis Downtown
Airport. You'll receive primary and instrument training using Diamond DA20, Piper
Arrows and Cirrus SR20s for commercial training, and Piper Seminoles for multi-engine
SLU's flight science students also take advantage of a repertoire of Frasca fixed-wing
flight simulators for simulation training. They’ll take their capstone course in a
state-of-the-art Canadair Regional Jet CRJ-700 simulator, conducting flights as if
operating as a 50-seat airliner. This additional training prepares you for initial
training at a regional airline.
The flight portion of SLU's B.S. in aeronautics curriculum is approved by the Federal
Aviation Administration under Part 141, FAA-approved certificate NI1S349K. Graduates
of the program earn a private pilot certificate, instrument rating and a commercial
pilot certificate with single and multi-engine ratings from the FAA.
Global Aviation Concentration
The global aviation concentration is an international experience from day one. You’ll
spend your first year studying in Spain at SLU Madrid followed by three years at our
St. Louis campus. Your aviation coursework begins the first semester, along with foundational
courses. Once in St. Louis, you'll take advanced courses in topics such as human factors,
crew and team resource management, and air carrier operations.
By the end of the program, you’ll have more than 200 hours of flight training, including
more than 100 hours of solo operation and an undergraduate degree required by many
of the world’s air carriers. Graduates of the program possess:
United States FAA-issued commercial single- and multi-engine airplane with instrument
Jet transition training conducted in a high fidelity (non-motion) flight simulator
Line Orientated Flight Training (LOFT) specific to the Canadair CRJ700.
Theoretical knowledge up to and beyond the JAA Air Transport Pilot License (ATPL)
Flight and ground experience necessary to transition to the JAA ATPL theory and CPL-IR
SLU's aviation science students have found highly competitive internships with Delta
Air Lines, Southwest Airlines, Jet Blue, Trans States Airlines and other carriers.
SLU’s Department of Aviation Science has also formed partnerships with different airlines
— including ExpressJet Airlines, Envoy Air Inc. and Republic Airways—and pilot groups to provide opportunities for students and graduates to become new-hire
pilots and/or to have a guaranteed interview with a commercial airline. Students who
graduate with a concentration in flight science from Saint Louis University are prepared
to enter the aviation industry as an airline, corporate or military pilot.
After graduation, we often hire our graduates as flight instructors within the aviation
Parks College’s low faculty-to-student ratio allows our world-class faculty to inspire

A recommended cumulative 2.50 high school GPA is required for freshman applicants
and 2.70 college GPA for transfer applicants.
You will need an ACT composite score of 20 or higher (minimums of 19 in English, 19
in mathematics, 19 in reading comprehension and 19 in scientific reasoning), or SAT
composite score of 1000 or higher with a SAT math sub score of 500.
Fifteen total units of high school work are required: three or four units of English;
four or more units of mathematics including algebra I and II, geometry and precalculus;
three or four units of science including general science, introduction to physical
science, earth science, biology, physics or chemistry; two or three units of social
sciences, including history, psychology or sociology; and three units of electives.
Minor in Aeronautics-Flight Science
SLU's flight science minor consists of 19 credit hours, which includes flight and
ground instruction courses. It is designed for students not already majoring in the
program who are interested in obtaining flight certificates and ratings. It is not
available to distance students.
Graduates are eligible to obtain a Private Pilot Certificate, Instrument Rating, Commercial
Pilot Certificate, and Multi-Engine Rating. Before enrolling, you must possess a Class
II FAA Medical Certificate and be able to comply with Transportation Security Administration
Earn a private pilot’s license by the end of your freshman year and take family and
friends flying over summer vacation.
Become a Certified Flight Instructor
By the the time you graduate with a degree in flight science from SLU, you'll have
the option to become a certified flight instructor yourself. Students who participate
in our flight scholars program will be reimbursed by SLU for the cost of the flight
