Saint Louis University's biomedical engineering degree offers the flexibility of three unique tracks of study whether you are interested in going into the industry, grad school or medical school. 

Biomedical engineering at SLU

Major in Biomedical Engineering

Offered through SLU’s Parks College of Engineering, Aviation and Technology, each track combines the University’s strengths in medical and life sciences with its engineering expertise. There is also an accelerated five-year Bachelor of Science to Master of Science option available.

SLU's biomedical engineering major offers you a foundation in core engineering classes and allows you to integrate undergraduate research into your experience starting your freshman year.

You'll have opportunities for collaborative research in areas such as biomechanics and orthopedics, tissue engineering, kinetics and metabolism, neuroengineering, medical robotics, medical imaging and more.

Many students also participate in SLU's Medical Scholars Program or the University Honors Program.


Plenty of room is built into the curriculum for you to explore electives in and out of the biomedical engineering department, or to pursue a minor from another discipline.

Internships and Careers

Summer internships and cooperative education programs are offered through hospitals affiliated with SLU and in the regional health care industry. You may also be able to pursue independent study in an area of biomedical engineering that interests you, under the guidance of a faculty member.

SLU's biomedical engineering graduates have a variety of career paths open to them, including industrial or consulting positions. Students can also continue their studies in graduate school or professional school such as medicine, veterinary medicine or even business administration.

Our curriculum allows students to specialize in and explore biomedical engineering, while still providing a solid background in biological and physical sciences, mathematics and basic engineering.

Admission Requirements

A cumulative 3.00 high school GPA is recommended for freshmen applicants and 2.70 college GPA for transfer applicants.

We recommend an ACT composite score of 24 or higher (minimums of 22 in English, 24 in mathematics, 22 in reading comprehension and 22 in scientific reasoning), or SAT composite score of 1100 or higher with a SAT Math sub score of 600.

Fifteen total units of high school work are recommended: three or four units of English; four or more units of mathematics including algebra I and II, geometry and precalculus; three or four units of science including general science, introduction to physical science, earth science, biology, physics or chemistry; two or three units of social sciences including history, psychology or sociology; and three units of electives.


Minor in Biomedical Engineering

SLU's minor in biomedical engineering requires 18 credits of coursework, including a course in physiology and at least five biomedical engineering courses. At least three of the biomedical engineering courses must be selected at the 4000-level, and all courses must be 2000-level or above.

Normally, each course is three credit hours, and may include review sessions and lab projects. The grades in all biomedical engineering courses must be C or better.

Organized Research Experiences

The flexible nature of this degree offers students increased opportunity to experience research. More than 25 percent of our undergraduate biomedical engineering students participate in an organized research experience within the department.
