Strategic Planning Process: Purposes

The purpose of the strategic planning process is to articulate and reach a common understanding of the future directions of the University.
The process involves a series of activities constructed to engage the University community in conversations about the following four questions. The objectives of these activities are to build consensus and commitment to the answers.

  • Where have we been?
  • Where are we now?
  • Where are we going?
  • How will we get there?

To address the questions, University community members were asked to participate in several activities and to join various groups. These groups included the following.

Internal and External Scan Committees
Composed of faculty and staff, the committees met in November 1999 and January 2001. Utilizing their expertise in the scan areas, committee members identified trends such as demographic, socio-economic, technological, educational, political, and regulatory issues affecting the University.

SWOT Analysis Group
Composed of faculty and staff, the group met in December, 2000, to aid in the analysis of the University-wide SWOT responses.

Design Team
A subcommittee of the Strategic Planning Group, the team met in February and March, 2001. The team designed the activities for the March 2 and 3 retreat of the Strategic Planning Group.

Strategic Planning Group
Composed of representatives of the internal and external University community, the SPG met on February 7 and on March 2 and 3, 2001. The group's tasks included reviewing the past 25 years of the University, identifying the challenges and trends having impact on the University now and in the foreseeable future, and exploring optimal futures for the University.

University Goals Groups
Comprised of faculty, staff and students, these four groups met several times in September and October 2001. Each group formulated and recommended University goals for one of the strategic directions.
