Billiken Briefs

WELCOME ABOARD: Christy Thomaskutty, Dan Rolfes and Constance Lockett have been named assistant coaches of the University's women's basketball team. Thomaskutty is a former standout basketball player for Tulane, and Rolfes served as the Billikens restricted earning coach during the 1996-97 season. "I don't think we could have found a better role model for a student-athlete," head coach Jill Pizzotti said of Thomaskutty. "And the benefit of having Dan as an assistant is that he already has been a part of our staff," she added. "This opportunity is great for his growth as a coach and gets him into the recruiting process." Lockett is a former Billiken player and will serve as the new restricted earnings coach.

ONE ON ONE: The athletic department has announced that One On One Productions, LLC, will produce Billiken basketball telecasts for the 1997-98 season.

PITCHER PERFECT: Baseball coach Bob Hughes has announced that Jeremiah Harrington, the West Los Angeles Player of the Year, has signed a national letter of intent to attend Saint Louis University and play baseball for the Billikens. Harrington, also recruited by College World Series participant UCLA, recorded a 1.56 earned run average this past season and struck out 76 batters in 54 innings. He started nine contests and finished his senior season with an 8-0 record.

PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Women's soccer coach Tim Champion has announced that Staci Dowdy has signed a national letter of intent to attend the University and play soccer for the Billikens. Dowdy played for Lewis and Clark Community College the past two seasons and was named the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Junior College Player of the Year in 1996. She has two years of eligibility remaining.

SCHOLAR ATHLETES: Conference USA commissioner Mike Slive has announced that 102 Saint Louis University student-athletes have earned recognition on the Commissioner's Honor Roll. Students receiving the honor maintained a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or above and participated in a conference-sponsored sport. "We are extremely proud of the continued display of academic excellence by our student-athletes," said Doug Woolard, director of athletics. "In our goal to provide the best partnership for academic and athletic experiences, these individuals fulfill their responsibilities to a high ideal." Twenty-two of the 102 Billiken athletes received the Commissioner's Academic Medal for maintaining a 3.75 or above GPA, while senior volleyball team member Lurie Jansen earned one of six $2,000 postgraduate scholarships handed out by the league.
