Media Matters


Members of the print and electronic media frequently call the University for experts on various topics in the news. The following are a few recent national media highlights.

Robert B. Belshe, M.D. (internal medicine) was interviewed by the Washington Post. Belshe commented on a phase II HIV vaccine trial under way. He also was interviewed about a new children's nasal flu vaccine by the CBS Evening News with Dan Rather, ABC World News Tonight with Peter Jennings (top story), USA Today (front page), CBS Radio News, Los Angeles Times, Wall Street Journal and Science News Magazine

Fran E. Kaiser, M.D. (internal medicine) was interviewed for the June issue of American Health about health and aging.

Elaine Siegfried, M.D. (dermatology) was interviewed by Sports Illustrated for Kids. Siegfried talked about things parents can do to prevent their children from getting sunburns this summer.

John E. Morley, M.D. (internal medicine) was interviewed by the Vancouver Sun and the Canadian Broadcasting Company about his recent research on testosterone and how it diminishes with age.

Dr. Ella Swierkosz (microbiology laboratory, SLUCare) was interviewed by Consumer Digest Magazine. Swierkosz discussed the new amplified DNA probe technology called URIprobe that more accurately detects sexually transmitted diseases.

Daryl W. Thompson, M.D. (neurology) was interviewed by Discover Magazine. Thompson discussed new treatment measures for stroke and how immediate attention to stroke symptoms can make the difference in containing stroke damage and reducing the severity of injury.

J. Regan Thomas, M.D. (otolaryngology, head and neck surgery) was interviewed by Consumer Digest Magazine. Thomas discussed his leading role in the push to get little league baseball players to wear face guards to protect against injury.

Debbie Moroney (SLUCare clinical nurse specialist, department of surgery) was interviewed by the Public Broadcasting System (PBS) for a documentary on organ transplantation and the need for donors. Moroney discussed her work with patients waiting for hearts who are placed on Ventricular Assist Devices (VADs) to bridge them to transplantation. Also interviewed were SLUCare transplant patients Cindy Riaz (heart), Alison Simcox (kidney/pancreas) and Jennifer McCarthy and son Cory (heart). The documentary will be completed within the next few months and will air on PBS stations across the country.

Jerome D. Cohen, M.D. (internal medicine) was interviewed for the June issue of Esquire Magazine on ways people can lower their cholesterol without drastically altering their diets.

Raymond G. Slavin, M.D. (internal medicine) was interviewed by CJAD radio in Montreal to discuss his study that showed inner-city children with asthma have an increase in related medical problems when allergic to cockroaches and exposed to cockroach allergens in their homes.
