SLU Hospital Ranked with Country's Best

U.S. News & World Report's 1997 guide to "America's Best Hospitals" places Saint Louis University Hospital among the nation's Top 40 medical centers in the specialties of geriatrics, cardiology, orthopedics and gastroenterology. U.S. News explains that "any institution listed among the top 42 medical centers in any specialty should be considered a leading center."

"We are extremely pleased to have four programs that are ranked by their peers to be among the elite in the country," said James R. Kimmey, M.D., vice president for health sciences and chief executive officer of SLUCare. "For us to have these programs nationally ranked reflects well for the entire institution and further enhances the reputation of Saint Louis University."

U.S. News OnlineIn its eighth annual edition, U.S. News assessed hospital care for 17 specialties at 1,800 hospitals nationwide, 135 of which scored high enough to be ranked. Rankings of 13 specialties were based on reputation and various medical data: AIDS, cancer, cardiology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, geriatrics, gynecology, neurology, orthopedics, otolaryngology, pulmonary disease, rheumatology and urology. Rankings in ophthalmology, pediatrics, psychiatry and rehabilitation were based on reputation alone.

In the specialties of geriatrics and gastroenterology, Saint Louis University Hospital returned to the top-40 list, ranking No. 17 and No. 42 respectively. New to the list, the specialty of cardiology ranks No. 28 and the specialty of orthopedics ranks No. 35.

The new rankings place Saint Louis University Hospital in the company of number-one ranked institutions such as the UCLA Medical Center (geriatrics); the Cleveland Clinic (cardiology); and the Mayo Clinic (orthopedics and gastroenterology).
