NCAA Certifies Billiken Athletics

The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) has fully certified the Saint Louis University department of athletics. The certification follows an extensive self-study and peer review that all Division I schools must undergo to ensure integrity within a university's athletic programs.

"This certification reaffirms the cornerstone of integrity within all of our athletic programs," said University President Lawrence Biondi, SJ. "Within the guidelines of the NCAA, Saint Louis University's commitment to the academic achievement and competitive success of our student-athletes will continue to grow."

The certified designation means that the University has demonstrated that it operates its athletic program in substantial conformity with principles adopted by the Division I membership. The self-study committee, headed by associate provost Dr. Brian Nedwek, examined the department's academic and financial integrity, governance and commitment to rules, and commitment to equity.

After the completion of the self-study, a peer group of administrators from other NCAA member institutions visited the University and heard from the self-study committee and other staff personnel. The peer group reported back to the NCAA Committee on Athletics Certification, which reviewed the information and certified the University's program.

"Saint Louis University's commitment to a successful partnership with its student-athletes is verified by the certification process," said Athletic Director Doug Woolard. "The two significant benefits of the process internally are that many departments involved in the self-study now have a better understanding of intercollegiate athletics, and we have been advised of new and different approaches to the various issues that face a department that is still in an aggressive growth phase."

Eventually, all 307 Division I programs will undergo the certification process.
